Facts About Car Rental Insurance

ByNelson McWilliams

Whether renting a car for business or for pleasure, the last thing anybody wants to have to worry about paying for damages to a rental vehicle should it happen. For this reason, there is car insurance to cover drivers who are operating a rental vehicle. Many people opt out of purchasing car insurance because they feel it is an unnecessary expense. The truth is, without car insurance a person could be liable for a lot more money than what the cost of car insurance would be if he or she were to sustain damage to a rental vehicle.

A common misconception among many people who rent a vehicle is that their personal auto insurance policy will cover them for rental vehicles as well. This is not always the case. Some personal auto insurance plans will cover a driver when he or she rents a vehicle but this is not the norm. A person should always consult his or her insurance policy or speak to his or her insurance agent to help determine if rental cars are covered on the personal auto insurance policy. If rental vehicles are not covered by the personal auto insurance policy, then the renter has a responsibility to secure rental insurance.

Car insurance can be purchased directly from the rental company. Many rental companies offer different insurance coverage plans to meet the individual needs of the renter. The car rental insurance premium is calculated by a daily rate and in some cases a weekly rate if a person is planning an extended rental period. The premium amount is added to the rental fees and paid for all together. A renter would have to opt for and purchase car rental insurance at the time of rental. It cannot be added at a later time. This alleviates the possibility of insurance fraud.

Purchasing car insurance is not always necessary when renting a vehicle. Some major credit card companies offer cardholders perks such as car rental insurance just for being a member. To be eligible for car rental insurance through a credit card company, that exact card will have to be used to secure the rental. Not all credit card companies offer this perk to its members. A person should always call and consult with an agent from his or her credit card company to determine if he or she has this coverage and what the eligibility requirements are to take advantage of this perk.

Despite the concerns of many individuals, car insurance is a solid investment. The cost for car rental insurance is far in comparison to the costs a person would endure if he or she would have to pay for damages out of pocket. Car rental companies always offer car rental insurance as an option at the time of rental. Some people may qualify for coverage either through their personal auto insurance or through their credit card company. They should always consult their insurance agent or credit card company to ensure they have coverage.

Rental Car Insurance

, personal car insurance, vacation insurance, rental insurance"; // -->Tom AndoBasic PLUSAuthor|  17 Articles

Many folks who travel opt to rent a car for their trip to avoid airport congestion, heightened security, and scanning. A rental car is a really good alternative especially if you are planning on traveling to a closer destination. Most wonder whether they need to insure the rented vehicle. While the answer to this question is yes, the insurance does not always need to be purchased directly from the rental company.

Keep in mind that there are a few different options that are available when purchasing such as:

· Your Personal Car Insurance

· Credit Card

· Car Rental Company

· Through Vacation Packages

Personal Car Insurance

Your personal car insurance usually offers coverage for rented vehicles at no extra cost. To have this benefit you will need to have one of your personal vehicles insured with full coverage in order to have the same coverage extended to a rental car. The deductibles will remain the same for your rented car as well.

In case of an accident, a car insurance company will not cover all the fees that are related to a rental car. The rental companies will charge fees for the days that a rental car spends in the shop being repaired. Make sure to check with your insurance provider whether they will cover the rental fees in case of an accident.

Credit Card

Most credit cards will offer coverage for a rental car. The requirement is to purchase your rental using the credit card that you want the coverage to extend from. In case of an accident, there may be possible fees on your credit card. The credit card company may charge you for the days that the vehicle is repaired. It is usually not possible to avoid these fees.

Car Rental Company

Buying car rental insurance directly from the rental company is the best option as they provide multiple coverage levels offering protection for you and the rental car. However, the downside to purchasing rental insurance through the rental company is that the price is much higher than other options that are available. The benefit to this is that you will not have any out of pocket expenses in case of a car accident.

Vacation Packages

A really good choice is to purchase insurance through a vacation package especially if you are traveling outside of the U.S. Bundled prices are usually much better and you may save a lot of money. Make sure to check whether you will be responsible for any fees if you are involved in an accident. The money that you have saved initially should be kept aside for any possible fees in case of an accident.

If you decide not to purchase car rental insurance through the rental company, you may save money in the long run, depending on the fees, and if you are not involved in an accident. It is essentially a gamble, so make sure to plan ahead and be prepared for the possible fees that could be devastating. Purchasing insurance directly from a car rental agency can be costly but will provide you with the best coverage and protection from out of pocket expenses.

There are many useful tips and advice on car insurance online, so make sure to do your research before making a purchase.

Do You Really Need Rental Car Insurance?

ByNicola Stevens

If you have never rented a car but plan on doing so in the future, you should know more about the rental insurance that many companies offer. Rental car insurance is essentially a waiver of collision damage. In other words, it covers damages on the car while it is in your possession. You are also covered if your rental car gets stolen. These are important to have in any case, but there are also more options you can add to the basic insurance such as personal effects coverage (if anything of yours is damaged or stolen) and personal accident insurance (which pays for your medical expenses and death benefits).

Rental car companies have probably fooled you into getting rental car insurance in the past, or maybe you are just wondering if declining insurance was a bad idea last time you rented a car. It is very important to know that rental car insurance is not a requirement. If you feel pressured by a company to add on the extra insurance, make sure you let them know that you are aware of the fact that it is not a requirement; if it were, it would be added on to the price by the company instead of being "offered" to you. In fact, there are some states that have made it illegal for these companies to imply that the insurance is a requirement, so you should check the laws in your state to see if this applies to you.

One thing to note about the insurance, however, is that there are some very good reasons to purchase it, as well as to decline it, when you rent a car. Being aware of these situations can help you avoid issues later on, so read on to find out when rental car insurance is important to have.

Getting the insurance can actually be a bit redundant because chances are that you are sufficiently covered through your own car insurance. However, you must get rental car insurance if you have liability-only insurance on your current policy. You also must get the "extra" insurance if you are not covered for theft and fires, or if someone causes an accident in your car and they are not on your insurance. However, you should know that if you are traveling for business, your company's corporate travel policy may include full coverage already, which makes the collision damage waiver superfluous.

Many people who drive older cars tend to have less insurance coverage, especially regarding accidents, fire and theft, all of which are required to be purchased for your rental car if you do not already have it on your own insurance policy. Being aware of exactly how covered you are by your policy is important at all times anyway, but most especially when you rent a car. If you need to check insurance rates, you should do so online to make the process streamlined. You can also read about additional insurance for rental cars.
