Car Insurance Myths

ByLeigha Fenster

A lot of people have an understanding of the myths that surround car insurance, but not the facts. It is time to get things straight. If you are shopping for insurance, some of the things you thought were common knowledge may not even be true. This may mean what you think is covered under certain policies really isn't covered, or what affects your rates actually have nothing to do with your insurance policy. Learning the truth can help you make an informed decision about what insurance policy you want, and what policy you need.

People believe that the color of your car has an effect on your insurance. Red is the most common color associated with this myth. As I am sure you can probably guess, since it's on this list, it isn't true. The color of the car you have or want has no affect what so ever on your insurance. What will have an impact are the make, model, and year of your car. They will use this information to try and determine the chances of the car breaking down or needing repairs.

If you have had a ticket, your insurance rates will be higher. Well, having one ticket technically will not increase your rate. An unpaid ticket can count against your license or can lead to suspension of you license. However, you're driving record does play a part in what your rate is, so it is possible that if you have had several tickets then it could affect your monthly rate. Speeding tickets will have a bigger impact than parking tickets.

Believing that your auto insurance policy will cover you if your car is stolen, vandalized, or damaged by fire, hail, or weather can get you into a tight spot. Most standard polices that are required by many states only covers liability. In order for you to be fully protected from those events, you will probably need a comprehensive coverage policy.

Some assume that if a friend is driving your car and gets in a wreck, their insurance will pay for the damages. Well, think again. In most cases, your insurance is considered the primary plan since it is your car. However, this may vary per plan. In some instances, your friends insurance may come into play if your insurance can not cover all of the repairs.

Older drivers may pay more for auto insurance. In actuality, they may pay less. Drivers who are 55 years of age or older can take an accident prevention course to qualify lower rates. However, this may change from state to state and depends on the company your policy is with. On the other hand though, your rates may go up if you are adding or are a teen driver.

Another popular myth is that you don't have to shop around if you have a good driving record. Getting insurance quotes from different companies can help you save money, no matter is you are a good or bad driver. Policies differ in coverage and price from company to company. So, comparing quotes and rates will help you get the best coverage for the right price.
