Essential Information on California Auto Insurance

ByLenker D Holmes

Known as the state where the sun perennially shines, California is also one of the most progressive places in this great country of ours when it comes to car insurance policy. There are some important things that you have to know about California auto insurance if you want to be able to legally own and drive a car in the state. You'd be glad to know that the state has one of the lowest cover requirements of auto insurance policy. In addition to this, the state also provides affordable car insurance program for residents who can't afford one. Do note that the policy only applies to low-income residents. Another thing that sets apart the state is the fact that it does not force you to get insurance policy that covers personal injury. These are the things that help make California as one of the cheapest places to get car insurance policy.

Minimum Coverage

When it comes to the required minimum coverage in the state, it varies from one another. But in general, the figure is lower compared to other states in the country. For example, the minimum coverage for bodily injury per person is set at $15,000. As for bodily injury per accident, the figure is set at $30,000. Do note that the last one applies to two individuals or more. Meanwhile, the minimum number that is set for property damage is $5,000. In comparison to other states that require drivers to get underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage, as well as personal bodily injury coverage - it is safe to say that the California auto insurance law is much more lenient.

The minimum coverage of the car insurance policy dictates the least number of coverage that you can get from car insurance provider. This means you can actually buy more coverage, but obviously you can't buy less of it. If you decide to buy more coverage, the premiums of your insurance policy will be increased by the provider. Despite the higher premiums, it would bring the most benefits should you ever find yourself get into an accident. Similar to other states, you have the option to carry full coverage, as well as carry deductible for collision.

What the Requirements Are

The California auto insurance law dictates that those who are over the age of 16 have to apply for a driving license should they wish to drive a car legally in the state. However, it is also possible to apply for a temporary permit by the time the driver hits 15 years and a half.

Laws

When it comes to the laws and regulations in California, it does forbid the use of cell phones - especially for texting. The penalty for those that disobey the law may come in the form of severe fines. This one falls under the distracted driver law. This law is intended to reduce the number of accidents that are caused by texting while driving, since it seems to have increasing significantly in the last couple of years. As for the DUI, the minimum blood alcohol content is set at 0.08 percent or higher. If you are driving while under the influence of alcohol with more than 0.15 percent - you will get severe penalties and fines.

Other States

It was mentioned above that California actually provides affordable insurance for low-income residents. This is a very popular policy sponsored by the local Department of Insurance. Those who can't afford to apply for California auto insurance due to their low income will be prioritized by the department. Depending on how much the person earns every month, the premium can be as low as $400 monthly.
