What You Should Know About California Auto Insurance

ByAnnie M Lacsina

The laws that govern car insurances vary from one state to another. If you live in California and it is your first time buying a car, you should be aware that the government of California will require you to avail of auto insurance. You should know the specific requirements to avoid any car-related problems in the future.

A known fact is that the residents of California pay for way more than the average insurance requirements in the United States. For one, it has minimum liability requirements, which people often call "15-30-5". This means that the minimum coverage for injuries is $15,000 for each person, $30,000 for all people in the car and $5,000 for property damage.

Because it is the "minimum", it means that a person has the option to increase the coverage according to what he deems more appropriate. This is to make sure that the financial protection for your car will not be less than what you may actually pay for. Increasing the amount of coverage will also protect you against lawsuits and mishaps.

There are several types of auto insurance that you can choose from. For instance, you may want to avail of a "comprehensive insurance". This is a policy that would pay for any damages incurred in your car. This type of insurance is advisable for those who have brand new cars because it has a wider coverage. Aside from accidents, a comprehensive insurance will also pay for other damages such as vandalism, fire or theft.

You may also opt to have uninsured motorist insurance. This type of policy pays for any damages incurred in case your car encounters an underinsured or uninsured motorist. This will protect the driver and passengers and will pay for all medical bills.

If you want to make sure that your car insurance will pay for damages in case of a collision no matter who is at fault, you may want to include "collision" on the list of coverage. This is a good option if you have a brand new or expensive car. Once the car is insured, you are more at peace with the fact that anytime your car encounters any accident, you are sure that you have financial protection. The California "Fair Claims Settlement Practices Regulations" specifies that any insurance company has a maximum of 15 days to acknowledge any claim filed. The insurance company also has the responsibility to help you out with your claim the best way possible. The 15 days is given for the insurance company to approve or deny the claim of the insured. Once the claim is approved or accepted, the company has a maximum of 30 days to pay for the insurance settlement.

If you are shopping for California auto insurance, be sure to ask all questions that you want to ask to make sure that you understand what you will be paying for. All coverages and liabilities should be clear to you. You should also get yourself an auto insurance quote from several companies so that you can choose which one gives the best deals.
