Why A Big Chevy Is Cheaper To Insure Than A Tiny Civic

When you first think about it, something as small as a Honda Civic should be pretty cheap to insure. Well, in comparison with something huge like a extended-cab Chevy pickup anyway. The reality is actually quite different and the big pickup will be the more affordable of the two. Yes, the half-ton monster of the road is more affordable to insure than a tiny almost-two-seater Civic. I couldn't believe it my self.

The car insurance companies have their own algorithms for determining their insurance rates, and some are more mysterious than others. This part however is not that mysterious. Let me explain, one of the biggest things that affects the car insurance rate is the driver's risk factor. This risk factor includes the type of car that is being insured in addition to probably hundreds of other things that have to do with the driver and probably his grandmother. In this article I want to discuss the car, because I was shocked when I found out that this huge Chevy is cheaper to insure than a small car like a Civic. So after doing a bit of looking around it was obvious why it is the way it is.

If you think about it, what type of person drives a Honda Civic? Probably a young male, maybe a college student. This is just me speculating here but it makes sense to me. Now, a young guy like that will be pretty likely to speed, to not wear a seat belt, run a red light and other risky things, and chances are he'd be doing all of the above all at the same time.

Now think about a half-ton extended-cab Chevy pickup... It is more expensive to buy and takes more money to fuel. A driver of something like that would most likely be someone a little older and probably more mature. This type of person would be less likely to do less-than-wise things on the roads and because of this exact fact, this type of person, or a person driving this type of car, will have a lower risk factor, which in turn makes the car insurance cheaper.

The top 10 cheapest cars to insure list for this year do not include even one sedan or a coupe. All 10 are either SUV's, Pickups or Vans. Bigger and less sportier car, statistically, means safer driver.

So the takeaway from this is that if you like to save money, buy a bigger, not as sporty type of car. A van, an SUV or a pickup, to be more specific. Some crossover types of cars also made it on the top-20 list, so those may be good candidates too.
