Replacement Parts And Your Car Insurance

Unless you're the type who regularly reads the fine print on most things, chances are your understanding of your car insurance is pretty basic and you don't think much of it until you get into an accident. And that's when you are sometimes surprised that the car parts used to repair your car are aftermarket replacement parts.

In the event of a claim, the insurance company will determine repair rates repairs based on historical averages. These rates are generally established using non-OEM parts, but are not in any way substandard or unsafe. Based on these rates, the insurance company will select which parts are suitable for your car. If you so desire, you can use an OEM part but the insurance company will charge you for the difference. It should not come as a surprise that insurance companies prefer the less expensive, generic-version car part for the repair of your vehicle. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts are generally more expensive, but with a higher standard of quality. And this is where the quality difference is reflected in the price of the car parts. While replacement parts meet industry safety standards, generic aftermarket parts sometimes show uneven gaps or rougher edges. These in no way impact the safety of the vehicle, but for meticulous car owners, a less than perfect repair is cause enough for some distress.

Many car insurance companies offer levels of insurance from which car owners can select from. These different tiers in an insurance policy offer a choice between OEM and generic repair parts. Of course, a policy that will automatically have the insurer choose OEM parts for repair will have a much higher premium. Choosing which coverage you want or can afford is up to the owner. Obviously, a Mercedes owner will want his or her car as perfect as possible in case it needs repair, whereas the owner of an entry-level commuter car may opt for a more budget-friendly solution. In most countries, there is a level of quality that insurers need to meet when a policyholder files a claim, and in some cases, this specifies that more expensive OEM parts be used. Most car insurance regulations also stipulate that the repair shop and/or insurance company should inform the vehicle owner when generic replacement parts are used. In many cases, replacement parts would have been made by the same company supplying the car manufacturer, so quality should not suffer. It must be said though that the proliferation of low-quality parts from China is a serious concern for owners who want only the best for their car.

In the end, even cheap car insurance cannot compel the insurance company to force you to use generic aftermarket parts. However, be prepared to pay extra if you choose to use an OEM part or a component that is not what the insurance company recommends. Needless to say, if a part isn't available in the aftermarket or is not compatible, the insurance company has no choice but to fit an OEM part at no extra cost to you.
