Shopping for a New Car? Consider the Insurance Cost Before Buying

ByRobert B. Lawrence

Expert Author Robert B. Lawrence

Shopping for a new car may be fun and exciting but we all know the bottom line comes down to cost. Not just the price of the vehicle but also what it costs to insure it. The insurance premium you carry is an important factor but you should consider other findings when looking for a quote that might save you some money.

There are certain cars that are surprisingly expensive to insure. Back in the day, I would give the example of the Ford Escort and the Ford Explorer. The Escort cost more to insure which was surprising since the vehicle was about two-thirds of the cost.

The simple example that I would give is to picture an accident between and Escort and a tree while going 5 MPH. The Escort would have a LOT of damage from a minor collision. That same accident in the Explorer would result in a scratch on the bumper and a big "Oops!" from the driver. Nothing more.

There are many more factors that go into a rate, but that is a snapshot to explain why it isn't just the price of the vehicle.

Consider a package deal. Combining home owners, life and car insurance could save you a good deal. Discounts such as safety devices on the car (air bags, daytime running lights, passive alarm, VIN Etching), good credit rating, good student credit, safe driving courses and if the car is a hybrid/electric car. Try increasing your deductible or paying your policy in a lump sum to reduce the premium as well. Each of these can save you premium dollars.

Always shop and compare the insurance costs of vehicles. It's surprising to know the fact that a more expensive car may be cheaper to insure! Insurance companies estimate many things when determining the insurance rates for specific vehicles. Factors that affect the premium are: accidents by vehicle model, cost of repairs for each vehicle, claims for injuries and cost to insurers if the car is a total loss.

Typically, the safer the vehicle, the lower the cost is to insure that same vehicle. Drivers of a minivan are less likely to be in an accident as those who may drive a souped-up sports car. But the minivan cost for parts and labor may be more than the sports car. Every car has a different rating with the insurance companies.

The task may seem daunting but with the ease of shopping around, and taking the time to look into a car, may save you money even before you get to the car dealership!

What You Should Know Before Buying General Car Insurance

ByAshley M May

Buying a car is now a necessity and no longer a luxury. As the world gets busier, so do you, and it is only better when you are able to access all the places that you wish to without so much of a hustle. Having saved up and bought your dream car, the next thing you will need to think about is insurance. Luckily, general car insurance companies are so many and the only challenge you might face is deciding which one to settle for. There are many factors one should consider when buying insurance.

First of all, you need to know about the laws in your state. Every state has their own set of rules that motorists should abide by. Find out the insurance requirements for your state before you get general auto insurance, as this will help you get a good package. A good insurance company should be able to advise you accordingly. Also, make sure you find out if there are any additional or optional coverage that may come in handy when you get an accident. Their purchase could save you a lot of money in the long run.

Apart from having a car, you need to understand the basics of car insurance so that you can make a better and informed choice. Read as much as you can from magazines or the Internet to know the difference in policies. Make as many inquiries as possible from different insurance companies until you are satisfied that you understand all you need to know about insurance. You will be in a better position to choose a general car insurance package that is ideal for you.

The next thing you need to consider is of course, how much money you are willing to spend. A good deal for anyone means getting a valuable asset for a lower price. If you shop fervently before buying, you will find your good deal. The many general auto insurance companies are in competition so there is always competition in prices too. Window shopping is good because it helps you see what is in the market before settling for the best. Choose a policy that has all the necessary coverage and comes at a good price. You do not want your insurance stifling you of all your hard earned money especially now that the fuel prices are on the rise. Use a car insurance calculator found in many websites to calculate how much coverage your policy should have or how much you will spend for the cover.

You also need to consider the type of car you drive. Different cars operate in different ways and therefore need different coverage. Know your car, and then choose the best cover for it. Men and women also seem to have different needs when it comes to insurance coverage. Luckily, some companies have recognized this and introduced car insurance for women. Though it is just like the men's, it is tailor made to suit a woman's needs.

These are just a few of the things you should find out before buying your insurance. With all this information at your fingertips, you can proceed to purchase your general auto insurance.

Six types of coverage are generally available to drivers for auto insurance. However, not every driver needs all six to have the best coverage. Choosing the details of your policy depends on your personal circumstances. The car you drive, your driving record, and number of violations is completely different than someone else.

An insurance policy can be tailored fit for your circumstances. For example, if you have recently experienced job loss, you may need only minimum liability coverage. Consider your choices fir coverage when it comes to adjusting your budget to a lowered income. You can talk to your agent about the changes you can make for saving money.
