Canadians Spend Average Of $3,100 Per Year For Insurance

WHAT'S THE OVERALL ANNUAL INSURANCE PRICE TAG?

Insurance means a lot of money for consumers, especially if they own several assets (auto, home) and want to protect their loved ones (life protection). But what exactly does it mean in terms of dollars? An independent research discovered that, on average, Canadians spend approximately $3,100 annually on their home, auto, and life insurance. This amount varies significantly across provinces and reaches $3,500 per year in Ontario, whereas the amount is much lower in Québec with approximately $2,400 annually.

TWO AND A HALF YEARS OF SALARY IN A LIFETIME

If we consider a working life time to be approximately 40 years, an average Canadian would spend $124,000 on insurance over a working lifetime (with an average salary of approx. $47,500 in 2011 / 2012. That means it would take about 2.5 years of salary to pay for insurance costs in Canada.

THE BIG THREE

The three largest components contributing to overall insurance premiums are home, auto, and life protection. This research takes into account consumers that have all three protections, and did not include other aspects, such as additional health benefits, credit protection (e.g. for mortgage or line of credit), travel insurance or luxury insurances such as coverage for boats, recreational vehicles or wine collections.

Which insurance contributes most to annual costs? No surprise here - auto protection is responsible for around half of all insurance costs. Home premiums contribute approx. 1/3 of all costs, and life premiums - 1/4.

INSURANCE IN ONTARIO REQUIRES BIGGER WALLETS

Insurance premiums vary significantly from province to province. The biggest difference results from variations in auto premiums. In Quebec, auto rates are much lower since the government covers injuries, whereas private insurers protect against property damage.

Ontario has the highest overall average annual costs of ~$3,600, followed by British Columbia with ~$3,200 and Alberta with ~$3,000. Of the four most populous provinces, Quebec consumers pay the lowest average costs of ~$2,400 for their insurance protection.

Ontario drivers pay significantly more for auto insurance than other Canadians, in part because the average cost of accident injury claims is five times higher than in other provinces as per recent report of auditor general Jim McCarter.

HOW DO INSURANCE PREMIUMS CHANGE FOR HOME RENTERS?

Those Canadians who don't own but rent their homes pay less on insurance premiums and average values go down by 25%-50%. Interestingly, the provinces with higher average insurance premiums for rented dwellings are Alberta and British Columbia, where the monthly insurance premiums reach $58 and $50 accordingly.

Driving Instructors Insurance Crucial As Roughly 100,000 Examinations End in a Near Crash

ByMartyn Piper

The Daily Telegraph reiterated figures from the Driving Standards Agency this year that 100,000 (approx) driving tests required the examiner to intervene and prevent a serious accident. Learners prematurely taking on exams are partly to blame but the roads have always been hazardous for green drivers - thankfully, the instructors can now use brokering firms to negotiate a specialised insurance package which protects them from forking out for compensation.

The Telegraph report stated 1,000 out of 1.5 million driving tests actually resulted in a crash or the examiner receiving abuse. A further 112,000 were categorised with a 'dangerous fault', which means anything that causes another road user to take necessary action for their own safety.

Driving test routes are usually identical to driving lesson routes and bumps between separate learners are likely as new drivers become comfortable behind the wheel. More teachers are now covering their unique dual-pedal vehicles with driving instructor insurance as they face an increasing threat.

The Association of British Insurers revealed in November 2011 that one in four of fatalities or serious injuries involve a young driver. The ABI went on to suggest there should be a compulsory one-year learning period for new drivers and short term crash courses should be banned. Something that most experienced drivers on the road would only appreciate knowing that novice and inexperienced drivers will be less likely to be taking risks on the roads.

Specialist licenses restricting young motorists to daytime only driving and limiting the amount of passengers they are allowed to carry, were also proposed by the ABI. The association went on to put forward the idea of a second test after two years of driving. Some young drivers might put up a fight about that one, arguing that if they were competent enough to pass the first test and navigate the roads for two years successfully, then another driving test would be unfair and unneccessary. However, the jury is still out on that one.

Indirectly, business would rocket for instructors but so too would the need for driving school insurance. Brokering services would see an increase in client activity too as they seek the specialised instructor insurance quotes.

The ideas are good for everybody and even though youngsters may not see the benefits initially - their own insurance premiums would seriously drop if they have more years experience and if there are less accidents happening as a result. And with more experience and responsible drivers on the road, both insurance seekers and those providing the insurance will be able to breathe easy.

Martyn Piper is an expert on automobile insurance and after working within the industry for many years he now writes and shares some of that wealth of knowledge on a variety of insurance products such as driving instructor insurance.
