In these tough economic times it may be tempting to skip out on auto insurance. After all, you could save anywhere from $50 to $200 a month (and maybe even more depending on your driving record) so it's certainly a tempting expenditure to skip out on. Our advice to you however is simple: don't! Auto insurance is critical to have for multiple reasons.
Firstly, if an officer pulls you over and finds out that you don't have the proper insurance you could be facing a very stiff financial penalty or even jail time depending on some jurisdictions (although the latter as punishment is rare). For example, in the state of California, the fine for failing to have insurance can range from anywhere from $100 to $500 plus additional penalties that the state imposes. Other places will actually revoke your license. This is a very stiff penalty to face for something that could easily just cost you $50 or so a month, depending on the policy you get.
Secondly, it is important to have for peace of mind. If you do get into an accident and you are at fault, you will be held liable. Do you really want to have the hassle of fighting a $100,000 lawsuit by yourself, all to save $50 a month? Many people sadly elect to do this only to find themselves faced with a large lawsuit because they were involved in an accident (and it was an honest accident, but they are deemed to be at fault). You definitely don't want to end up in this scenario. Getting a bare-bones policy will at least give you some peace of mind that this scenario won't happen.
As such, we highly recommend that you search for an affordable policy that fits your budget. You don't necessarily need a Cadillac plan - just one that will insure that if something major happens, your bills and any potential suits are covered. It's also important to remember that good driving habits are rewarded with insurance companies, so if you are a good driver your premiums will come down significantly in the long run (this is especially true if you are a teenager). Don't speed or do anything that might endanger your premiums within the first few years as they are the most critical to ensuring that you have long lasting very low rates for as long as you drive!
