In the old days, the task of car insurance comparison was back breaking and time consuming, as it involved a series of phone calls or worse, visiting individual companies.

The trick to comparing auto insurance companies is to know exactly how they operate as well as knowing what you need. Every state by law requires some type of liability. After that though, the rules begin to change. Additional coverage such as comprehensive or collision vary according to how much of a deducible you want and what your state requires. If you have a great driving record, you may want to opt for a higher deductible which will lower your monthly payment. Not every insurance company offers this, but it is a great option to inquire about.

A staggering amount of people who compare auto insurance companies and rates are oblivious to the fact that their credit score may influence the insurance rate they are offered. If your credit score is good, this won't be a concern. If there are any black marks on your record however, inquire as to whether this is taken into consideration by every insurance company you are shopping. Some companies charge as much as an additional 20-50% more to those with poor credit history.

Some insurance companies have what is called a discount checklist and being privy to these discounts could save you a fortune. Some of these discounts include the well known safe driver discounts, over the age of 25 discounts and some even offer driver education discounts. But often times there are lesser known about savings and when you compare car insurance you want to ask if they incorporate any of them.

Group discounts are becoming popular with many insurance companies, therefore if you are affiliated with any charitable organization, college or university, military or even some credit unions, ask about whether the car insurance company offers these types of savings. In some cases, it may even be a financially savvy decision to join a group depending on how much of a discount the insurance company offers.

Online bill pay has become popular for many consumers and this is another way to possibly save money on car insurance. Many companies charge a paper processing fee for mailing your monthly bill and may not even tell you. Inquire about this fee when comparing car insurance. Better yet, many companies now offer discounts if you sign on to have your monthly bill withdrawn directly from a savings, checking or credit card account.
